...Kubatons are a simple, effective and affordable means of self-protection as accessible as your keys are. It can be carried openly without being an obvious weapon which is a great advantage.

CK Kubotan is a family-run business located near Portland, Oregon. Their first products were the Neon Kubotans, designed to increase personal protection, but not look like a weapon. The bright colors make them popular with all ages, and their simplicity makes using them intuitive.

Over the years other products have been added, including aluminum and brass models and the recent Koppotan. Each Kubotan is crafted by hand to achieve their original goal - self protection on your key chain!

The aluminum model is wrapped with high strength nylon cord which gives it a very sure grip. Aluminum is also light yet still effective.

Please take a look at the growing selection of the very best kubotans made today. CK Kubotans!

The Kubotan is a self-defense tool developed many years ago by the famous Japanese martial artist Takayuki Kubota. Police officers in Japan used the tool for humane riot control, and it was later used with success by police officers in the U.S. When attached to your everyday key ring it becomes an effective and accessible tool for self protection.

The Kubotan is designed to be used against bony surfaces, soft tissue and nerve points. It can produce a high degree of pain and temporary paralysis to an assailant, allowing the victim time to escape. The keys may also be flailed at the attacker, stunning him in preparation for the next strike. One does not have to be a martial artist to use it effectively, using one is intuitive. The Kubotan increases the power of any blow, usually directed to the closest body part, and with training many other techniques can be learned.

The Kubotan, a personal self- defense device, perfect for today’s weapon-sensitive world, and a great way to carry your keys!

Some Kubotan basics:

Carry methods- Regardless of the CK Kubotan model you carry, it is important to decide what carry method works best for you. The kubotan’s advantage is that it is attached to your keys, and your keys are almost always with you. (We recommend at least five or more keys for flail power, and even something heavier; such as a small flashlight, Swiss army knife etc.)

It is best to always have your keys in your hand, but if that is not possible they need to be accessible. If you cannot get to them, they cannot help protect you. If your keys are in your purse, they need to be at the top and ready to grab. The kubotan’s shape makes it easy to secure your keys in pockets, with the keys dangling out. The front pocket of jeans works very well, as does the back pocket, or under your belt. However, remember that if your keys are in the back pocket they can be grabbed by someone from behind. Some people are more comfortable carrying their keys and Kubotan in a belt sheath, a small nylon sheath is perfect for this carry method.

If your keys are not in your hand, know where they are and be ready to use them!

Grips- Grip the Kubotan in your palm with the keys at either the thumb end or pinkie end of the hand. Choose what grip is most natural for you. The keys can be flailed with either grip, but sidearm blows and jabs are not inhibited by the keys with the pinkie end grip. The keys at the thumb end allow for a more effective hammer fist blow. Again, this is a matter of preference, experiment with both grips and use what feels best. Do not forget that you can switch hands, practice doing this as it can be an advantage in certain situations.

Mindset- When someone enters your personal space and attempts to harm you, they have thrown away the “rule” book. You must not waver in doing what is necessary to stop the attack and escape. Meditate on the fact that you will not be a victim until this concept is second nature.

Some techniques- The Kubotan lends itself to intuitive, reflexive methods. Always explode with a primal scream or by yelling “No!”, since this will add to the overall power of your defense. This is a good time to stun the attacker with multiple whipping key strikes to the face using a figure-eight motion. The keys can be used on any part of the body, to shock and disorient.

Think about the centerline of the assailant, the shins, knees, groin, stomach, solar plexus, neck, and under the nose. If you are presented with the attacker’s side, aim for the ankles, knees, ribs, under the armpit, behind the ears and temple. The tops of the shoulders, back of neck, spine, small of back and calves are all excellent ways to cause pain to the invader.

Always remember to use your other hand to block, strike and rake. The best place to start is with a claw-hand into the attacker’s eyes.

Often the person will start by grabbing you from the front with one or both hands. Striking downwards onto the top of the hand, forearm, biceps or top of shoulder will free you up to move out of range. Try to continue with a sequence of strikes until no longer in danger.

When grabbed from behind, swing the Kubotan straight up and backward, striking the attacker in the face, or with a strike to the groin. In the case of a bear hug from behind, with your arms locked, place the end of the Kubotan on the top of the assailant’s hand and press down forcefully. This and a foot stomp to his arch should allow you to break free.

In grappling situations used the Kubotan to pinch an earlobe, with the skin between the Kubotan and your thumb. If the attacker grabs the Kubotan between his fingers, squeeze his fingers against the shaft.

As you become more proficient with the tool, it is recommended that you take a course on intermediate and advanced techniques. This will allow you to take full advantage of the Kubotan by learning seizing methods, wrist locks and takedowns.

There is no end to the creative ways a simple device like the CK Kubotan can help protect you and your family. Practice, and remember that with a Kubotan in your hand, whatever you do will have more power to keep you safe.
