...The terrible events of September 11, 2001 have had an effect on this knife niche as well. First, as the security of the airlines has tightened literally millions of mostly harmless little keychain knives have been confiscated and need to be replaced. Second, with an increasing sensitivity to what people consider a "weapon" having a small inconspicuous knife on your keychain can be a good substitute for a small pocket knife in the eyes of the public.

It is unfortunate that the term "knife" and the term "weapon" are synonymous in the minds of so many people. I always insist that people use the appropriate term for a knife which is "tool". When you consider the myriad uses for a knife, the great majority are utilitarian rather than felonious.

In addition, most anything can be used as a weapon as can be illustrated by the ingenuity exercised by prison inmates. We cannot simply create more laws to try to control the actions of an extreme minority of the population. Knives are tools!

With that said, I think it is important to recognize our responsibility as knife users to exercise the best possible safety habits for ourselves and those around us. This is another benefit of the keychain knife. As they are generally small of course the blade will be smaller and will limit the possibility of extreme injury.

One of my favorite keychain knives was a simple promotional item that was in the shape of a key. It was lightweight plastic and will last you about a year. But, what I liked about it was that it was low profile and had a razor sharp little blade that measured about 3/8". It's amazing how many utilitarian functions that a blade that small can achieve!

Please check out our growing selection of keychain knives and tools.
