Sheffield knives are synonomous with tradition and quality and named from the nexus of English knife production -Sheffield, England.
Rather than have a separate catagory for each Sheffield knife company we decided to put them together in one easy to access page.
Sheffield is one of the undisputable top cutlery towns in the world. It has a long history of producing some of the finest cutlery ever made.
Here is very brief history.
Sheffield is east of Manchester, across the Pennine range of hills that form the backbone of Northern England.
In the 12th century, William de Lovetot, a Norman Baron, constructed a wooden castle where the the Rivers Don and Sheaf meet. It was around this castle that the city of Sheffield would eventually grow.
Because the area had an abundance of iron ore, thick oak forests for charcoal and fast flowing rivers for water power it naturally developed as a center for the metal trades.
The manufacture of cutlery began as early as the middle ages. In the early 17th century Hallamshire was founded, Hallamshire was (and still is) a guild, whose purpose is to regulate the quality of Sheffield cutlery.
As the years passed Sheffield gained prominance as the world's capital of industrial metal work.
Alloy steels were developed in the city in the 19th century. With the advent of stainless steel in the early 1900's the city had another boon in the manufacture of high quality cutlery.
There are still several fine cutlers operating in Sheffield as well as a host of talented independent craftsman called "little mesters".
You will find some excellent examples of hand-made hunting knives by "little mester" Reg Cooper of Sheffield, England at World Knives.
We also offer some fine knives from Sheffield's Taylor's Eye Witness Saynor. These knives are hand made and worth every penny!
In addition we have some knives from A. Wright and Son. Ltd. Of Sheffield. Dollar for dollar these are Sheffield's' best!
Please take a look at these hard to find knives. I am sure there will be something that "tickles your fancy" in our selection of Sheffield knives.
